Commenting as a Strategy to Build Relationships, Awareness and SEO Results for your Law Firm

By writing thoughtful and pertinent comments on other articles and blog posts, you can increase your firm’s awareness and bump your site’s search engine optimization too.

So, you have a great website and have just started writing regular posts on a firm blog. You have embraced social media and are Tweeting links to your firm’s content as well as other interesting articles written by industry leaders. And you are seeing some results in your site traffic too. Great job!

Now I’ve got another tactic for you to try. Start commenting on articles and blog posts.

Here’s why…

Insightful comments make you look like a thought leader. Don’t just say “nice article,” or simply paste in your Website link, as that is a waste of your time and will annoy those that are part of a serious conversation. But if you have something interesting to add, or an alternative viewpoint, show off your expertise in the comments section. It’s a great way to increase exposure for you and your firm.

You become a part of a larger community of experts. By associating yourself and your law firm with well-respected experts in the legal profession, and in the industries you serve, you will be seen as an expert yourself.

It connects you to respected writers, blogs and sites. Commenting on articles will expose you to other experts that are doing the same thing, and you’ll learn about other valuable resources for information.

It leads writers and other commenters back to your site. Most sites ask those commenting to include their Website along with their name, so this is a great way to increase exposure and bump up your SEO. Test it out. Comment on a few articles on well-respected sites, and include your Website on each. Then check out your Google Analytics and see if there’s been an increase in traffic. I bet you’ll see a bump.

It can lead to more press coverage. I was recently talking to a business colleague who has been using this strategy for a while, and it’s paying off beautifully for her. Her SEO has improved. She’s increased her Twitter followers and LinkedIn connections. But here’s something I found fascinating. She recently commented on an article on the Inc. website and shared her opinion on the post. A few days later, one of the editors of the print version of Inc. Magazine contacted her and asked if it would be okay to include her comment in their next edition. So not only was she seen and heard online, but now her name and the name of her company will be included in a print magazine that has a reach of over a million readers and is one of the most respected business publications in print today. Not bad!

Have you used this tactic with success? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the COMMENTS below.

Great post - I never thought about the PR consequence of commenting. Do you have a rule of thumb for length of comment? Is content such as a question (like my comment here), critique, or factual narrative ok? My whole issue about commenting is that I don't want to spend my time getting involved and having the comment not posted. Would you allow a competitor to post? How would you gauge a worthwhile blog to make a comment on?

KellenBryant No rule of thumb on length of comments. From my perspective, any comments that are sincere-agree or disagree- are ok. I am also ok with competitors posting on my site.Everyone is different. Some bloggers do not like any type of links. If you start following a blogger you will get to know the style and what you can and can't do ont their blog. Bottom line it is their decision. I would gauge a worthwhile blog as one that informs and educates. I read many legal maketing blogs and found as a group we make fewer comments than other bloggers. I will comment on any post that I find interesting. Thanks for reading and making your comment!

Tom_Matte This is great advice. Commenting is especially important to those who are just entering into the online conversation. Fosters professional connection, demonstrates expertise/experience/knowledge, and good will.

Comment, share, cite, publish, repeat.

gyitsakalakis Thanks for your comment. Not to prove my point, but in fact it does! I just headed over to your blog and read a few of your posts. Great stuff. I will be back.

Thanks for shedding light on this topic. I’ve spent years building online presence via my company’s blog, but haven’t really spent much time commenting on others blogs. Recently, I started working with my PR firm to deepen the company’s online presence, and commenting was one of the first tactics to implement. Although I’ve only done it for a short period of time, I’m starting to see the significance of putting your name out there and collaborating with others to build relationships and awareness.
